The carrier which transfers the electrons in electron transport system

    A)                  phytochrome

    B)                  cytochrome

    C)                  quantasomes

    D)                  fucoxanthin

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Cytochromes are proteins with characteristic strong absorption of visible light due to their iron-containing haem prosthetic groups. Mitochondria contain 3-classes of cytochromes designated as a, b and c. These cytochromes are integral proteins of the inner mitochondrial membrane and cause the electron transfer during ETS. Phytochrome is a proteinaceous pigment associated with flowering stimulus. The phytochrome has open tetrapyrrole structure and exists in two forms, ie, phytochrome red (absorbs 660 nm) and phytochrome far red (absorbs 730 nm). Quantasome is smallest photosynthetic unit of chloroplast and discovered by Park and Biggins (1964). Each quantasome contains about 230 chlorophyll molecules.
