    B)  Eohippus

    C)  Pliohippus

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Pliohippus (Pliocene horse) is the first one toed horse, whose fossil remains are found from upper Miocene and Pliocene. There was reduction of the side toes 2nd and 6th. Mesohippus (intermediate horse) appeared in Oligocene and was of the size of sheep. The legs were long and slender and the number of toes in both forelimbs and hindlimbs was reduced to three but fifth digit in forelimbs was represented by a splint. Eohippus (Daven horse or Hyracotherium) appeared in the beginning of Eocene and its remains are abundants in the deposits in Wyoming. The hindlimbs were moderately longer. The limbs were digitigrade. The forelimbs possessed 4 digits and hindlimbs three. The first and fifth digits in the hindlimbs were represented by splints.
