Myelinated nerve fibres are white colored because of

    A)  chromidial substance

    B)  neurolemma

    C)  myelin

    D)  None of the above

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Myelinated or medullated nerve fibres are covered by two sheaths-myelin and neurolemma. Myelin is inner sheath rich in lipids and formed of alternative bands of fat and protein. Myelin sheath prevents loss of energy and impulse dilutes. Neurolemma is the outer sheath of medullated nerve fibre and non-medullated nerve fibre. It is continuous and made of transparent flat tubular and tightly spirated cells called Schwann cells or neurolemmocytes.
