The green colored pigment present in all autotrophs was named chlorophyll by

    A)  Pelletier and Caventou

    B)  Julius Rober Mayer

    C)  Jean Senebier

    D)  Malvin Calvin

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Pelletier and Caventou gave the term chlorophyll. It is a class of pigments found in all photosynthetic organisms. It is a magnesium porphyrin compound. The porphyrin ring consists of four pyrol rings joined to a long chain together by CH bridges. A long chain of C-atoms called as phytol is attached to porphyrin ring. The molecular formula of chlorophyll-a is \[{{C}_{55}}{{H}_{72}}{{O}_{5}}{{N}_{4}}Mg\]   and chlorophyll-b is \[{{C}_{55}}{{H}_{70}}{{O}_{6}}{{N}_{4}}Mg\]. Jean Senebier (1782) was the first to classify the fact that fixed air \[C{{O}_{2}}\]  was an important factor in photosynthesis.? Malvin Calvin (1954) traced the path of carbon in photosynthesis using unicellular alga Chlorella. Malvin Calvin gave \[{{C}_{3}}\] cycle and were awarded Nobel Prize in 1960 for the discovery.
