A small aquatic plant was put in each of the petri dishes ? X, Y and Z, containing different culture solutions.        After six weeks the plant in dish X has the same number of leaves as it has previously and were all      small and yellowish. Plant in dish Y had more leaves of normal size and dark green colour. Plants in dish Z       had more leaves of normal size but very pale. Which of the following shows the element missing in the        culture?

    A)
    X Y Z
    Magnesium Phosphorus Nitrogen

    B)
    X Y Z
    Phosphorus Magnesium Nitrogen

    C)
    X Y Z
    Phosphorus Nitrogen Magnesium

    D)
    X Y Z
    Magnesium Nitrogen Phosphorus

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Magnesium is the constituent of chlorophyll, activation of enzymes of phosphate metabolism in respiration, photosynthesis, DNA and RNA synthesis, fat synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, maintenance of ribosomes. Its deficiency results in interveinal chlorosis appearing first in older leaves, veins green chlorotic area may turn necrotic premature leaf abscission reduced growth underdeveloped pith and phloem etc. Phosphorus is a constituent of nucleotides, nucleic acids, certain proteins, phospholipids\[NA{{D}^{+}},NAD{{P}^{+}}\]. Its deficiency results in poor growth; leaves green or without purple and red spots of anthocyanin, chlorosis followed by necrosis first in older leaves, poor vascular tissues premature fall of flower buds and delay seed germination. Nitrogen is a constituent of amino acids, proteins, hormones, enzymes, coenzymes, chlorophyll, vitamin, cytochromes, ATP. It results in chlorosis, growth stunted due to decreased protein synthesis, premature leaf fall, suppression of lateral buds and purple colouration of shoot surface, late flowering etc.
