Which of the following combines irreversibly with blood haemoglobin?

    A) \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    B) \[~{{O}_{3}}\]

    C)  \[CO\]

    D)  \[C{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Carbon monoxide has 200 times more affinity for haemoglobin than oxygen. On combining with haemoglobin, it forms a stable compound called carboxyhaemoglobin which is poisonous in nature and thus decreasing the oxygen carrying capacity of haemoglobin. About 23% of total blood \[C{{O}_{2}}\] is transported by loosely binding with haemoglobin forming a unstable compound called carbamino haemoglobin.
