In big cities, the major atmospheric pollutant is

    A)  carbon monoxide and oxides of sulphur

    B)  hydrocarbon and hot air

    C)  pollens and marsh gas

    D)  ozone

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The major atmospheric pollutants in big cities are carbon monoxide and oxides of sulphur. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is the main a pollutant. It is colourless, odourless, non-irritating gas formed by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. It is highly toxic for man and other animals as it impairs respiration and causes headache. It combines with haemoglobin more readily than oxygen forming carboxyhaemoglobin and thus reducing oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Sulphur dioxide is next to CO in causing air pollution. Excess exposure to this gas stings the eye and causes a burning sensation of throat. It is the main component of acid rain. Heavy dosage of \[S{{O}_{2}}\] degrade chlorophyll and affect photorespiration in plants. When hydrocarbon are acted upon by nitrogen oxides under the influence of ultraviolet radiation of sunlight, mixture of oxidized hydrocarbon (Peroxy Acetyl Nitrate-PAN) and ozone are produced. This mixture is called ?Smog? or ?haze? which is responsible for causing disease like asthma and bronchitis. Pollen grains cause various disease and allergies. Marsh Gas (methane) is green house gas, it is produced naturally by decay of garbage, aquatic vegetation etc.
