The osmotic parameter determining the flow of water from one cell to another is

    A)  OP

    B)  DPD

    C)  TP

    D)  Hydrostatic pressure

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

DPD (Diffusion Pressure Deficit) term was coined by Meyer and is defined as ?Reduction in diffusion pressure of water in a system over its purestate?. DPD determines the direction of net movement of water and always occurs from an area of low DPD to higher DPD.                                 DPD = OP - WP(TP). Osmotic Pressure (OP) is defined as maximum pressure, which can develop in a system due to osmotic entry of water under ideal condition. It may also be defined as the pressure required to completely stop the entry of water into an osmotically active solution across a semipermeable membrane. It is measured in atmosphere, bars or pascals. Turgor Pressure (TP) is the pressure exerted by the swelling protoplast or system on its wall due to osmotic entry of water into it. Turgor pressure is also known as hydrostatic pressure.
