    Light reaction takes place in

    A)  grana

    B)  endoplasmic reticulum

    C)  stroma

    D)  mitochondria

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Light reaction is a unique feature of photosynthesis. In it, light energy is transformed by photophosphoiylation into chemical energy in the form of the energy source, ATP and \[NADP{{H}_{2}}\], which are used to reduce carbon dioxide. It takes place in grana of chloroplast and is completed in following steps (i) Absorption of light energy (ii) Transfer of light energy (iii) Activation of chlorophyll (iv) Photolysis of water (v) Electron transfer and synthesis of assimilatory power. Endoplasmic Reticulum provides greatly expanded surface area for biochemical reaction which normally occurs at or across membrane surface and provides skeletal support to the colloidal complex of hyaloplasm. It also has transporting business of extracellular and intracellular chemical molecules. In stroma, dark reaction of photosynthesis occurs. ATP and NADPH produced by light reaction are utilised in dark reaction to reduce carbon dioxide to carbohydrate by process called carbon fixation. Also known as Blackmans reaction. Mitochondria are the organelles for the production of energy by Krebs cycle, electron transport chain and beta oxidation of fatty acids.
