                     Gymnosperm (Gymnos = naked, sperma = seed) also known as ?phanerogams without ovary? are the most ancient group of seed plants, originated in Devonian period of Palaeozoic era. They became dominant plants over the earths surface during the Jurassic and Cretaceous period of Mesozoic era. During Silurian period of Palaeozoic era, dominance of algae continued and origin of primitive terrestrial ferns took place. During Carboniferous period of Palaeozoic era, there occurred spreading of swampy forests of club mosses, horsetails, lycopods, seed ferns and gymnosperm, ferns originated and origin of bryophytes took place. During Cretaceous period of Mesozoic era, there occurred decline of. gymnosperm and dicot angiosperm flourished, thick forest of oak, maple etc and first monocots originated.
