Growth rings are absent or not sharply demarcated in the trees of

    A)  temperate deciduous

    B)  tropical evergreen

    C)  temperate evergreen

    D)  tropical deciduous

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The cambial activity is seen in the temperate trees in two seasons of year. In the spring season, the vessels are broader as more water is needed to meet the requirement by increased transpiring surface, thus a light coloured broad zone of spring wood or early wood is formed. The autumn season brings leaf fall in deciduous trees. Thus the water requirement is reduced and hence, narrow vessels having darker contents are formed. As a result a dark coloured narrow band of autumn wood or late wood is formed. The two woods jointly constitute the annual ring or growth ring.
