    Virion is a

    A)  bacterium

    B)  blue -green algae

    C)  simple virus particle

    D)  None of the above

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Virion is intact virus unit or infectious particle. A virion is composed of either DNA or RNA enclosed in a coat of protein. It cannot reproduce independently of living cells. The protein coat (capsid) form nucleocapsid which may be naked or surrounded by a loose membraneous envelope. The capsid protects the nucleic acid against the action of nucleases. The word bacterium is of Greek origin meaning ?Little Rod (or stick)?. Bacteria are minute, unicellular organisms with primitive state of organisation (prokaryotic). They are non-chlorophyllous and reproduce mainly equally by binary fission.  Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria) show many similarities with bacteria but their evolution pattern is different. They are unicellular, colonial or formed of chain. Their cell structure is prokaryotic. They lack membrane bound organelles and the nucleus is of incipient type and reproduce asexually.
