An octamer of four histones complexed with DNA is called

    A)  endosome

    B)  puff ring

    C)  nucleotine

    D)  nucleosome

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Nucleosome is the fundamental unit of chromatin of which eukaryotic chromosomes are made. It consists of a core of histone proteins (2 molecules of each \[{{H}_{2}}A,{{H}_{2}}B,{{H}_{3}}\]and \[{{H}_{4}}\]) around which are coiled DNA. Constutive nucleosomes are joined by uncoiled linker DNA. Endosome is a vesicle formed within a cell during endocytosis, in which the material to be ingested first binds to receptor sites on the cell surface. These receptors occur in the areas of plasma membrane called coated pits, which are pinched off to become coated vesicles surrounded by protein coat and containing the ingested material within the cells. Puff rings are present as swelling in giant chromosomes at specific stage. Puffs are associated with messenger RNA and are sites of gene transcriptions. Also known as Balbiani rings, eg, salivary gland chromosome of Drosophilla.
