The plants may face wilting due to use of excess fertilizers because of

    A)  endosmosis

    B)  exosmosis

    C)  imbibition

    D)  transpiration

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The use of excessive fertilizers makes the oil water hypertonic against cell sap of plant resulting in exosmosis (osmotic withdrawl of water from cell sap when placed in hypertonic solution) and thus results in wilting. Endosmosis is the osmotic entry of water into a cell or system when placed in pure water or hypotonic solution. Imbibition is the adsorption of water by solid particles of an adsorbing substance without forming a solution, eg, swelling of seeds. Transpiration is defined as the loss of water in the form of vapours from the aerial parts of plants.
