    Which is a metalloid?

    A)  Manganese

    B)  Phosphorus

    C)  Oxygen

    D)  Arsenic

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Key Idea Metalloid Those elements which form cation in acidic medium and anion in alkaline medium are called metalloid. They form amphoteric oxide. Metal Elements which form positive ion by losing electrons are called metals. They form basic oxides. Non-metal Elements which form negative ions by gaining of electrons are called non-metal. They form acidic oxides. Here, phosphorus and oxygen is non-metal, because their oxides are acidic in nature. Manganese is a metal because it is a transition element. (All transition elements are metal) Arsenic is a metalloid, because its oxide, ie, \[A{{s}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] is amphoteric in nature.
