It is possible to obtain oxygen from air by fractional distillation because

    A)  oxygen has lower density than nitrogen

    B)  oxygen is in different group of periodic table from nitrogen

    C)  oxygen is more active than nitrogen

    D)  oxygen has higher boiling point than nitrogen

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Fractional distillation is applicable to separate those component whose boiling points are very close to one another, ie, differ by 10 to 15 K. The boiling point of oxygen is 90 K and boiling point of nitrogen is 77 K. Therefore, it is possible to obtain oxygen from air by fractional distillation.
