  • question_answer
A ray of light is incident surface of a plate of glass of refractive index 1.5 at polarising angle. The angle of refraction of the ray will be

    A) \[60.2{}^\circ \]

    B) \[16.8{}^\circ \]

    C) \[43.7{}^\circ \]

    D) \[33.7{}^\circ \]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

                     From Brewsters law                 \[\mu =\tan \,{{i}_{p}}\]where \[{{i}_{p}}\] is angle of polarisation. Given,   \[\mu =1.5\] \[\therefore \]  \[{{i}_{p}}={{\tan }^{-1}}(1.5)={{56.3}^{o}}\]When r is angle of refraction, then we know that                 \[r+{{i}_{p}}={{90}^{o}}\] \[\Rightarrow \]                               \[r={{90}^{o}}-{{i}_{p}}\]                                 \[={{90}^{o}}-{{56.3}^{o}}={{33.7}^{o}}\]
