Deficiency of vasopressin (ADH) leads to

    A)                  diabetes mellitus

    B)                  diabetes insipidus

    C)                  Graves disease

    D)                  goiter

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

When vasopressin or ADH is released in smaller quantity, diuresis increases, urine becomes diluted and blood becomes concentrated, decreasing BP. This condition is known as polyurea or diabetes insipidus (passing of water, tasteless urines). It causes dehydration of body and thirst. Diabetes mellitus results due to hyposecretion of insulin hormone. As the concentration of insulin decreases, there is rise in blood sugar level-hyperglycaemia. Graves disease results due to hypersecretion of thyroid hormone. There is enlargement of gland due to diffuse growth. Goitre results due to hyposecretion of thyroid hormone so, as to obtain more iodine, the gland itself enlarges by increasing the number of follicles. The enlarged gland causes a collar like front swelling in the neck called goitre.
