    Solution :

Crocus sativus is the member of family Iridaceae. It is a perennial plant having an underground conn, bearing sessile, linear and sheathing leaves. The perianth is tubular, reddish purple having 3 stamens and a 3 loculed inferior ovary. The ovary terminates in 3 drooping deep red stigmas. Dried stigma and tops of styles form commercial saffron. Saffron contains a volatile oil, which contains a glucoside picrocrocin and a colouring matter crocin. In grasses, stigma are two in number and feathery. They arise directly from wall of ovary as style is generally absent or short. In Papaver somniferwn, noecium is polycarpellary, syncarpous, ovary superior, unilocular, parietal placentation, many ovules on each placenta, stigma persistent, discoid with stigmatic rays.
