If the anthers are fused together forming a tubular structure while the filaments remain free, the condition is found in which one of the following family?

    A)                  Malvaceae

    B)                  Cucurbitaceae

    C)                  Solanaceae

    D)                  Asteraceae

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

In members of Asteraceae (Compositae, sunflower family) androecium has stamens 5 in number, syngenesious or synantherous (anthers fused but filaments free), anthers basifixed, connective often prolonged beyond anther, dehiscence longitudinal and introrse, superior. In Malvaceae, androecium consists of indefinite stamens. Stamens are monadelphous. The staminal tube remains united at the base to the petals and therefore, the condition is epipetalous, filaments are dorsifixed. In Cucurbitaceae, androecium is absent. Sometimes staminodes are present. Staminodes are rudimentary stamens, which do not bear fertile pollen. In Solanaceae (potato family), 5 rarely 4 or 2, free, epipetalous, often unequal, anthers bithecous, basifixed or dorsifixed, dehiscence longitudinal (eg, Petunia) or porous (eg, Solanum) inferior are found.
