Increasing accumulation of DDT in organisms of a food chain in higher trophic level is known as

    A)                  biological magnification

    B)                  biotic potential

    C)                  biotic component

    D)                  None of the above

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Biological magnification or biological amplification or food chain concentration is the phenomenon leading to continuous increase in concentration of persistent chemicals by organism at successive trophic level in a food chain for eg, if DDT enters a pond or lake, it is taken as such by the plants of the pond, then reaches to zooplankton feeding on plants, than to minnows eating the zooplankton, then to fish, which eats the minnors and finally in the body of birds who eat the fish. Biotic potential is the inherent capability of an organism to increase in number, under ideal condition (absence of competition, predators, parasites etc). Biotic component (living component) is the trophic structure of any ecosystem, where living organisms are distinguished on the basis of their nutritional relationship.
