    D)                  Gradlaria

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Carrageenins chief source is red algae. Chondrus crispus (Irish moss). It is a cell wall polysaccharide and is a mucilagenous extract. Carrageenin is used in food, textile, pharmaceutical, leather and brewing industries. It is also used to stabilize emulsions and as remedy for cough. It is used as a component of tooth paste, deodorants, cosmetics and paints. Gelidium and Gracilaria are source of lagar-agar which is a mucilage and stored with cellulose in the cell wall. Agar-agar is a gelatinous, clear and nitrogen free compound and is used in preparation of food stuffs. It is insoluble in cold water but soluble in hot water, used as a base for culture media, used in preparation of medicines and in cosmetics, used as laxative and as an emulsifier in dairy products. Laminaria is a source of alginic acid. The salts of alginic acids called alginates are used as thickeners in food industry, cosmetics and in textile industry as printing paste. They are also used as emulsifiers, as gelling agents in confectionary, dental impression powders, paints and ice creams.
