    Klinefelters syndrome occurs because of

    A)                  presence of extra X-chromosome in male

    B)                  presence of only one X-chromosome in female

    C)                  presence of extra XY-chromosome in male

    D)                  presence of extra Y-chromosome in male

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Klinefelters syndrome occurs due to the presence of an extra X-chromosome in male,  ie, 44 + XXY (47). The male suffering from this abnormality are mentally retarded and sterile due to absence of spermatogenesis. Presence of only one X-chromosome in female results in Turners syndrome (44 + XO). It results due to fusion of gametes (ovum or sperm without sex chromosome) with second normal gamete. Female suffering from this has limited secondary characters, sterile and webbed neck. Presence of extra Y-chromosome in male results in Jacobs (YY) criminal syndrome. Males are usually tall with oversecretion of testosterone.
