Which of the following is the abundant protein in human body?

    A)  haemoglobin

    B)  myoglobin

    C) \[\alpha -\]keratin

    D)  collagen.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

: Collagen is one of the most important animal proteins and an important structural component of fibrous tissues (eg skin, tendon, cartilage). Collagen is synthesized, primarily by fibroblasts as tropocollagen. Collagen contains about 35% glycine, 11% alanine, 12% proline and small percentages of other amino acids. Collagen is chemically inert which suggests that its reactive side groups are immbolized by ionic bonding. Collagen fibrils are highly complex and have a variety of orientations depending on the biological function of the particular type of connective tissue. The secondary structure of collagen is that of a triple helix ofpeptide chains. Its tertiary structure is one of three alpha helices in a super helix, which is responsible for its role in support tissues.
