During photorespiration, the oxygen consuming reaction (s) occur in:

    A)                  stroma of chloroplasts and mitochondria

    B)                  stroma of chloroplasts and peroxisomes

    C)                  grana of chloroplasts and peroxisomes

    D)                  stroma of chloroplasts

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The first reaction of photorespiration occur in stroma of chloroplast. In this reaction the RuBP (Ribulose 1-5 Diphosphate) consume one oxygen molecule in presence of enzyme Rubisco.                 In peroxisome the glycolate transfered from chloroplast takes up \[{{O}_{2}}\] and formed the glyoxylate whereas the \[{{H}_{2}}{{O}_{2}}\] release as byproduct.
