  • question_answer
Carbon and oxygen forms two compounds. Carbon content in one of them is 42.9% while in the other is 27.3%. The give data is in support with

    A) law of definite proportions

    B) law of reciprocal proportions

    C) law of multiple proportions

    D) law of conservation of mass

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

If \[\text{C}=\text{ 42}.\text{9}%\]then \[O=\text{1}00-\text{42}.\text{9}=\text{57}.\text{1}%\] Let 100g of the compound is taken, then 1 g oxygen combines with \[=\frac{42.9}{57.1}=0.75g\] carbon. In the second compound, \[O=\text{1}00-\text{27}.\text{3 n }=\]72.7% 1g oxygen combines with\[=\frac{273}{72.7}=0.375g\]of carbon Ratio of carbon in two compounds combining with fixed weight of oxygen \[=0.\text{75}:0.\text{375}=\text{2}:\text{1}\] Hence, it supports law of multiple proportion.
