    Melatonin also known as chemically N-acetyl 5-methoxytryptamine. It is a naturally occurring compound found in animals, plants and microbes. In animals, circulating levels of the hormone melatonin vary in daily cycle thereby allowing the entertainment of circadian rhythms of several biological functions. Melatonin is a derivative of amino acid tryptophan. It targets melanophore cells of skin and is antagonistic in action to that of melanocyte stimulating hormone secreted by the pars intermedia of pituitary. Melatonin plays very important role in the regulation of 24 hour rhythm of our body.
