Assertion (A) A solution of sucrose in water is dextrorotatory while on hydrolysis in presence of little hydrochloric acid, it becomes laevorotatory. Reason (R) Sucrose on hydrolysis gives unequal amounts of glucose and fructose as a result of which change in sign of rotation is observed. Each of these questions contains two statements. Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Each of these questions also has four alternative choices, only one of which is the correct answer. You have to select one of the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) given below.

    A) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is correct explanation of Assertion.

    B) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

    C) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

    D) If both Assertion and Reason are false.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Sucrose on hydrolysis gives equal amount of glucose and fructose. Thus, fructose is more laevorotatory than glucose is dextrorotatory, therefore, the sign of rotation changes.
