Assertion Crystalline solids can cause X-rays to diffract. Reason Interatomic distance in crystalline solids is of the order of 0.1 nm. In each of the flowing questions, two statements are given. One is portion and the other is reason. Examine the statement carefully and mark the correct answer according to the instruction given below

    A) If both the assertion and reason are true and reason explains the assertion.

    B) If both the assertion and reason are true but reason does not explain the assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

In case of diffraction the slit width must be of the order of wavelength of incident ray. The spacing of the atoms in crystal is of the order of wave length of X-rays (0.1 mm) which is so in crystalline solids. Hence, X-rays are diffracted from crystalline solids.
