At a particular locus, frequency of 'A' allele is 0.6 and that of 'a' is 0.4. What would be the frequency of heterozygotes in a randomly mating population of equilibrium?

    A) 0.16

    B) 0.36

    C) 0.48

    D) 0.24

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

                    According to Hardy-Weinberg equation, \[{{\text{P}}^{\text{2}}}+\text{2PQ}+{{Q}^{\text{2}}}=\text{1}\] Where, P = Dominant allele frequency \[Q\]= Recessive allele frequency \[{{\text{P}}^{\text{2}}}\]= Homozygous dominant genotype 2PQ = Heterozygous genotype \[{{Q}^{\text{2}}}\] = Homozygous recessive genotype Here, P=0.6 and \[Q\]=0.4 Therefore,   \[\text{2PQ }=\text{2}\times 0.\text{6}\times 0.\text{4}\] =0.48
