Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion Only a single functional female gamete is formed from each primary oocyte cell. Reason Meiosis in each primary oocyte gives rise to only one cell which functions as ovum.

    A)  extinction of these species from other regions

    B)         continental separation

    C)         absence of terrestrial route to these places

    D)         retrogressive evolution

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Secondary oocyte again divides by second meiotic division and again gives rise to two unequal-sized cells. Larger of these two is known as ovum (functional female gamete) and smaller one is second polar body. Sometimes, first polar body also divides simultaneously with secondary oocyte and gives rise to two polar bodes. Thus, in a complete oogenesis three polar bodies and one functional female gamete or ovum through a meiotic division is formed.
