Breakdown of complex organic matters into simple inorganic raw materials such as carbon dioxide, water and various nutrients by the activity of microorganisms is known as decomposition. The chemical quality of detritus or climatic factors regulate the rate of decomposition of dead animals and plant parts (detritus). Amongst climatic-factors, the main role is played by temperature and soil moisture through their regulatory effect on the activity of soil microbes. At high altitude, the temperature becomes very low (<10°C). It greatly reduces the activity of microbes, principal decomposers. Nutrients immobilisation means tiding up of nutrients material with the biomass of microbes. This immobilisation prevents the nutrients from being washed out from the ecosystem.
