Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: The   heat   adsorbed   during isothermal expansion of an ideal gas against vacuum is zero. Reason: The volume occupied by the molecule is zero.

    A) If both Assertion: and Reason: are true and the Reason: is the correct explanation of the Assertion:

    B) If both Assertion: and Reason: are true but the Reason: is not the correct explanation of the Assertion:

    C) If Assertion: is true but Reason: is false

    D) If both Assertion: and Reason: are false

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In isothermal expansion, \[\Delta T=0\] and thus \[\Delta E=0\] and in vacuum, no work is done against surroundings thus, \[W=0\] \[\Delta E=Q+W\] \[0=Q+0\] \[Q=0\] Molecules of ideal gas occupy some volume, Here, Reason: is not true.
