    Toxins released from Corynebacterium diphtheriae cause diphtheria. Actually, bacterial cells do not contain gene for toxin production-a phage carries the gene for it. Only those lysogenised cell of C. diphtheriae which carry p phage, can produce the toxin and cause diphtheria.
