Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: A thin stainless steel needle can lay floating on a still water surface. Reason: Any object floats when the buoyancy force balances the weight of the object.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C) If assertion is true statement but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

When a thin steel needle is laid on surface of water, it sinks as upward force due to buoyancy does not support its weight. But when needle is laid carefully on a still water surface then due to surface tension of water molecules it displaces as much amount of water as its weight. Thus, due to buoyancy force and surface tension it floats on water surface. Hence, option (c) is true.
