Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: In adiabatic compression the internal energy and temperature of the system get decreased. Reason: The adiabatic compression is a slow process.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C) If assertion is true statement but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In adiabatic process, there is no exchange of heat between the system and the surrounding. This can be possible if the gas under adiabatic process is allowed to expand or compressed very quickly. Thus, it is a quick process. When the gas is compressed adiabatically, the heat produced cannot escape to the surrounding through the insulating walls. As a result, the temperature of the gas and hence, the internal energy increases. Hence, option (c) is true.
