Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Photoelectric emission is an instantaneous process. Reason: There is no time lag between incidence of light and emission of photoelectron.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C) If assertion is true statement but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

There is no time lag between the instant the photon of light falls on the metal surface and the instant a photoelectron is emitted from the metal surface. It cannot be explained by assuming wave nature of radiation. If wave nature of radiation is assumed, then it will take quite a long time (about an year) for electron to come out of-the metal surface. Hence, option (a) is true.
