During protein synthesis in an organism, at one point the process comes to a halt. Select the group of the three codons from the following, from which any one of the three could bring about this halt?

    A)  UUU, UCC, UAU

    B)        UUC, UUA, UAC

    C)        UAG, UGA, UAA

    D)        UUG, UCA, UCG

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

During chain termination some codons function as non-sense codons or terminators which provide stop signals for the end of m-RNA chain synthesis. UAA (Ochre), UAG (Amber) and UGA (Opal) are termination codons. If these codons are present in m-RNA, the protein synthesis stops abruptly whether the protein synthesis is complete or not.
