Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Addition of \[HBr\] on 2-butene gives two isomeric products. Reason: Addition of \[HBr\] on 2-butene follows Markownikoffs rule.

    A)  If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

    B)  If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C)  If assertion is true statement but reason is false.

    D)  If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Addition of \[HBr\] on 2-butene gives two. isomeric products. \[C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{2-butene}{\mathop{CH=CH}}\,-C{{H}_{3}}\to C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{H}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\mathop{CH}}\,}}\,-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,H-CH\]                                   or   \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,H-\underset{H}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\mathop{CH}}\,}}\,-C{{H}_{2}}\] But    addition    involve    carbocation intermediate thus racemic mixture is obtained. It follows Markownikoffs rule for the addition of HBr not to form isomeric products.  So reason is not correct explanation.
