Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: The number of electrons in a p-type silicon semiconductor is less than the number of electrons in a pure silicon semiconductor at room temperature.

    A) Reason: It is due to law of mass action. If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

According to law of mass-action     \[n_{i}^{2}={{n}_{e}}{{n}_{h}}\]        For p-type semiconductor, number of electrons is less than the number of electrons in a pure silicon semiconductor that is for p-type semiconductor, \[{{n}_{e}}<{{n}_{h}}\]. Note: n-type semiconductor has excess of electrons.
