Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion: Extraction of iron metal from iron oxide ore is carried out by heating with coke. Reason: The reaction, \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}(s)\xrightarrow{{}}Fe(s)+\frac{3}{2}{{O}_{2}}(g)\] is a spontaneous process.

    A) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

    B) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

    C) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

    D) If both Assertion and Reason are false.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Iron is obtained from \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] by heating Fe with a mixture of coke and \[CaC{{O}_{3}}\] in a blast fumance in which CO formed reduce \[F{{e}_{2}}+C{{O}_{2}}\] to Fe. \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}+CO\xrightarrow{{}}Fe+C{{O}_{2}}\] The reason is false as the reaction: \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}(s)\xrightarrow{{}}Fe(s)+\frac{3}{2}{{O}_{2}}(g)\] is    not spontaneous as for this reaction both \[\Delta H\] and \[\Delta S\] are negative so \[\Delta G\] will be positive.
