Assertion: In a food chain members of successive higher levels are fewer in number. Reason: Number of organisms at any trophic level depends upon the availability of organisms which serve as food at the lower level.

    A)  1

    B)        2

    C)        3

    D)        4

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Each food chain contains many steps like producers, herbivores, primary carnivores and so on. Each step of the food chain is called trophic level. Number of organisms at any trophic level depends upon the availability of food. In grassland ecosystem the maximum number of organisms are found in lower trophic level but in forest ecosystem and parasitic food chain it is reverse.
