    Methyl orange comes under:

    A)  mordant dye

    B)         nitro dye

    C)         acid dye

    D)         basic dye

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Methyl orange is an example of acid dye. Acid dyes are azo dyes and are characterised by acid groups like sulphonic acid \[(-S{{O}_{3}}H)\], carboxylic acid \[(-COOH)\] and phenolic group. They are used for silk, nylon and wool. A dye which impart different colours to different fabrics in the presence of different metal ions is called mordant dye. Basic dyes contain \[-N{{H}_{2}}\] group or \[-N{{R}_{2}}\] group as chromophore or auxochrome.
