Elaters are long, slender shaped, diploid structures occur in the capsule of Marchantia sporophyte. These structures are formed by sterilization of some sporogenous cells which function as elater mother cells. Later on elater mother cells become enlarge, their protoplasmic contents disappear and spiral thickening develop on the inner surface walls. Now, they function as elater cells. Elaters are hygroscopic and their twisting movement help in dispersal of spores of Marchantia.
