Directions for: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following five responses A. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true and the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion. B. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true but the Reason is not a correct explanation of Assertion. C. If the Assertion is true but the Reason is false. D. If both the Assertion and the Reason are false. E. If Assertion is false but Reason is true.

Assertion:  \[\sigma \] is strong while n is a weak bond. Reason: Atoms rotate freely about n bond.

    A)  A

    B)         B

    C)  C

    D)  D

    E)  E

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Sigma bond is a type of covalent bond formed by axial overlap of half-filled atomic orbitals. Pi \[(\pi )\] bond is a type of covalent bond formed by side-ways overlap or lateral overlap of atomic orbitals. Sigma bond is stronger than \[\pi \] bond because of the fact that overlap of atomic orbitals take place to a greater extent during the formation of sigma bond whereas overlapping of orbitals occurs to a smaller extent during the formation of n bond. Thus, more amount of energy is required to break \[\sigma \] bond."                                                  An atom cannot rotate freely around a double bond.
