Directions for: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following five responses A. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true and the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion. B. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true but the Reason is not a correct explanation of Assertion. C. If the Assertion is true but the Reason is false. D. If both the Assertion and the Reason are false. E. If Assertion is false but Reason is true.

Assertion: Stannous chloride is a powerful oxidising agent which oxidises mercuric chloride to mercury. Reason: Stannous chloride gives grey precipitate with mercuric chloride, but stannic chloride does not do so.

    A)  A

    B)  B

    C)  C

    D)  D

    E)  E

    Correct Answer: E

    Solution :

Stannous chloride \[(SnC{{l}_{2}})\] is a strong reducing agent and not oxidising agent so, it reduce mercuric chloride to Hg to form a grey precipitate. But \[SnC{{l}_{4}}\] (stannic chloride) cannot reduce \[HgC{{l}_{2}}\] \[\overset{+2}{\mathop{SnC{{l}_{2}}}}\,+HgC{{l}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}\overset{+4}{\mathop{SnC{{l}_{4}}}}\,+Hg\downarrow \]
