Plasmids are self-replicating, circular, extra chromosomal, double stranded, DNA molecules commonly occur in the bacterial cells. Their size ranges from 1 x 106 to 200 x 106 Daltons. Due to self-replicating capacity and also due to antibiotic, heavy metal resistant power, plasmids are variously used in genetic engineering as vectors.
