Directions for: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following five responses A. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true and the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion. B. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true but the Reason is not a correct explanation of Assertion. C. If the Assertion is true but the Reason is false. D. If both the Assertion and the Reason are false. E. If Assertion is false but Reason is true.

Assertion: Transmission of nerve impulse across a synapse is accomplished by neurotransmitters. Reason: Transmission across a synapse usually required neurotransmitter because there is a small space, i.e., synaptic cleft that separates one neuron from another.

    A)  A

    B)         B

    C)         C

    D)         D

    E)         E

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

A synaptic cleft is a 10 to 20 nm space between axon of one neuron and dendrite of other neuron or between two axons or between axon and cell body of other neuron. The membrane on the axon side of the synaptic cleft is called the presynaptic membrane and the membrane on the receiving axon or muscle cell side is called post synaptic membrane. When a wave of depolarization reaches the presynaptic membrane, it stimulates a flow of calcium into the cell, sudden rise in the level of calcium in the cytoplasm triggers the release of organic molecules, called neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft and this molecules then bind to receptor molecules present in the post synaptic membrane of the target cell and thus, information transmits.
