Directions for Question: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following four responses:

Assertion: Lower aldehydes and ketones are Soluble in water but the solubility decreases as the molecular masses increase. Reason: Distinction between aldehydes and ketones can be made by Tollens test.

    A)  If both A and R are true, and R is a correct explanation of the A.

    B)  If both A and R are true, but R is not a correct explanation of the A.

    C)  If A is true, but R is false.

    D)  If both A and R are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Lower aldehydes and ketones are soluble in water due to polar effect of \[>C=O\] which makes hydrogen bonds with water molecules. As the size of the aldehydes and ketones increases the hydrophobic part i.e., alkyl chain increases which weakens the H-bond formations with \[{{H}_{2}}O\] molecules and decreases the solubility.
