Ethylene glycol is used as an antifreeze in a cold climate. Mass of ethylene glycol which should be added to 4 kg of water to prevent it from freezing at \[-{{6}^{o}}C\] will be: (\[{{K}_{f}}\] for water \[=1.86\] K \[kgmo{{l}^{-1}}\] and molar mass of ethylene glycol \[=62kgmo{{l}^{-1}}\])   AIEEE  Solved  Paper-2011

    A) 304.60 g

    B) 804.32 g

    C) 204.30 g

    D) 400.00 g

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

                 \[\Delta {{T}_{f}}={{K}_{f}}\]m for ethylenglycol in aq. solution \[\Delta {{T}_{f}}={{K}_{f}}\frac{w}{mol.\,w\,t.}\times \frac{1000}{w\,t\,of\,solvent}\] \[6=\frac{1.86\times w\times 1000}{62\times 4000}\] \[\Rightarrow \,\,w=800\,g\] So, weight of solute should be more than 800 g.
